How Eli.A Jumped from a 1360 to 1510 on the SAT!
When Eli.A’s family first connected with North American Tutors, the goal was clear: help Eli get his ideal SAT score of 1400+. He didn’t need a complete overhaul. He needed structure, strategy, and someone to guide him through the noise of test prep. And that’s exactly what we did
Starting Point: Motivation Without Direction
When Eli began working with us, he hadn’t yet taken the SAT — but he had been preparing independently and wanted focused support to push his score into the 1400+ range. After a few weeks of foundational work, Eli sat for his first official SAT and scored a 1360 (660 Math, 700 Reading & Writing).
It was a solid baseline, and with clear insight into his performance, we shifted our focus to targeted skill-building and strategy. From there, things started to accelerate.
Phase One: Foundation Building with Frances
Eli began weekly tutoring with Frances O’Grady, working on both Math and English. Sessions focused on:
Vocabulary and grammar structure
Linear and nonlinear equations
Timing techniques and test strategy
Tracking errors with a “missed questions” log
By March, Eli had taken another full-length practice test, and the results showed clear improvement, especially in math. In his weekly report, Frances wrote:
“Based on his results, he’s likely to meet his goal score on this SAT. We saw the greatest improvements in math. I'd be happy to continue working with him if he wants to improve further.”
Phase Two: Precision Tutoring with ZacharyAfter his March SAT, Eli continued prep with Zachary Wagner, focusing on more advanced material and refining his approach. Zach’s tutoring emphasized diagnosis over repetition:
“We’d walk through the toughest problems together. Eli would explain his logic first, then I’d coach him through any blind spots. It was less about giving answers - more about helping him think like the test makers.”
Their sessions included:
Advanced algebra and geometry
Graph interpretation and function behavior
Tricky word problems and setup
Long-form reading inference and poetry
Vocabulary, data analysis, and timing drills
They reviewed official Digital SATs (DSATs #8–10), breaking down every mistake to understand why the error occurred, not just what the answer was.
The Breakthrough: A Real 1510 on the Official SATBy early June, Eli had worked through nearly every major SAT concept - and his confidence showed. He scored a 1500 on a final practice test, and soon after, sat for the June SAT.
Official Score: 1510
Breakdown: 760 Math | 750 Reading & Writing
Eli’s father, Michael.A, shared:
“Thank you, we’re very happy with the result! A special shout out to Zachary — Eli really enjoyed working with him. He has several friends who are interested in working with him. Eli will send them your way. Thanks again!”
Why Eli’s Story MattersEli’s success is proof that smart, personalized tutoring can bridge the gap between potential and performance. He didn’t just study harder, he studied smarter, with tutors who understood the test and the student behind it.
At North American Tutors, we believe test prep should be tailored, not templated. Eli’s journey shows what happens when a student buys into the process and puts in the work: real, measurable growth.
