What is the ACT Science section?

The ACT Science section is a 40-question, 40-minute optional test that measures scientific reasoning and data interpretation. It is not a content test. Students do not need to recall biology formulas, periodic table data, or chemistry equations to answer the questions.

The section presents six passages drawn from biology, chemistry, physics, and earth/space science. Each passage comes with graphs, tables, diagrams, or written experiment descriptions. The questions ask students to read and interpret that information accurately and quickly. A student who has never taken AP Chemistry can score a 32 on ACT Science if they are an efficient reader of scientific data.

Since the Enhanced ACT launched in 2025, Science no longer contributes to the ACT composite. It is reported separately on the 1-36 scale, and students who take it receive a STEM score combining Math and Science. How the ACT Science section changed in 2025

For decades, Science was one of four required ACT sections. It counted equally with English, Math, and Reading toward the composite. That changed.

Starting with digital administrations in spring 2025 and extending to all test formats by September 2025, ACT Inc. redesigned the exam. Science became optional. Students who skip it receive a complete composite from English, Math, and Reading. Students who opt in pay an additional registration fee and receive a Science score and STEM composite on top.

The section also got a timing upgrade. It ran 35 minutes under the old format. Under the Enhanced ACT, it runs 40 minutes. That gives students about one full minute per question instead of 52 seconds, which helps pacing meaningfully.

What does ACT Science actually test?

ACT Science tests one core skill: reading and interpreting scientific information quickly and accurately.

That is it. Students who walk into the section expecting to recall AP Chemistry content are usually surprised to find that the passage provides everything they need. The test does not check whether you memorized the second law of thermodynamics. It checks whether you can read a table or graph that references it and answer a question about it correctly within about 60 seconds

The three formal skill areas the section measures are:

  • Evaluation of Models, Inferences, and Experimental Results: Assessing which conclusion a dataset supports. Identifying assumptions and limitations. Understanding what the data does and does not prove.

Under the Enhanced ACT, a fourth skill area was added: Engineering and Design Thinking. These questions appear primarily in Research Summaries passages and ask whether a proposed design achieves its intended goal. It is a reasoning task, not a recall task.

Data Representation passages are typically the fastest to answer. The information is in front of you. Research Summaries require a bit more reading but follow predictable patterns once a student has practiced them. Conflicting Viewpoints is where most students lose the most points and the most time.

On a typical test, you will see roughly three Data Representation passages, two Research Summaries passages, and one Conflicting Viewpoints passage. The passage order is not fixed, so scanning the section briefly before starting helps students decide where to begin.

How is ACT Science scored?

Under the Enhanced ACT, Science does not affect the composite at all. A student who earns a 34 composite but scores a 22 on the optional Science section still has a composite of 34. The composite stays intact.
