Match the tutor to the actual score gap
A student with a grammar and rhetorical-synthesis problem may need a different teaching approach from a student struggling with algebra or advanced math.
A junior who is already close to a likely state cutoff may need a National Merit prep tutor. A sophomore may need broader skill development and a realistic SAT timeline.

Can a National Merit tutor help your student qualify?
A National Merit tutor can help the student understand the scoring system, identify realistic targets, and prepare for the PSAT/NMSQT.
A tutor cannot control the qualifying score or guarantee recognition.
Start with the selection index.
The National Merit Scholarship Corporation uses the NMSC Selection Index as its initial screen.
The calculation is:
Selection Index = (2 × Reading and Writing score + Math score) ÷ 10
The Selection Index ranges from 48 to 228. Reading and writing, therefore, carry twice the weight of Math within this formula.
For example, a student with a 720 in Reading and Writing and a 700 in Math has a Selection Index of 214.
A single nationwide total-score target is not accurate. Semifinalist qualifying scores can vary by state and selection unit because NMSC sets them through a state-representative process.
Know which test counts
The PSAT/NMSQT is the qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship Program.
PSAT 10 has the same subject matter, score range, and difficulty, but it does not provide National Merit entry. PSAT 8/9 also does not produce an NMSC Selection Index.
NMSC usually uses the PSAT/NMSQT taken during the student’s third year of grades 9 through 12. Students with unusual educational patterns should review the official rules.
Use a state-aware target range
A responsible tutoring plan should consider:

The student’s state or selection unit
Recent qualifying ranges
The time remaining before the exam
Past cutoffs can guide planning, but they do not predict the future result with certainty. Final qualifying scores become available after the relevant testing cycle.
Be honest about feasibility
A National Merit prep tutor should tell the family whether the current target appears reasonable.

How many repeatable errors remain
Whether Reading and Writing need special attention
The number of full-length tests available
The student’s school and activity workload
When National Merit becomes unlikely, the work still has value. PSAT preparation can create a strong starting point for the SAT.

Who benefits most from a private PSAT tutor?
A private PSAT tutor is most useful when the student has a defined goal or a problem that independent practice has not corrected.
Sophomores building a baseline
The PSAT/NMSQT and PSAT 10 are identical in subject matter, score range, and difficulty, but they are offered at different times.
A sophomore can use preparation to:

The goal should not automatically be maximum intensity. A long preparation cycle can create burnout before the qualifying year.
Juniors targeting National Merit
A junior should begin with the current Selection Index and testing date.
For 2026, schools may administer the PSAT/NMSQT on school days from October 1 through October 30. Schools may also choose Saturday, October 17.
The student does not register directly through College Board. Families should confirm the school’s chosen test date early.
High scorers trying to remove small errors
Students already near the top of the score range may not need broad review.

PSAT/NMSQT content is very similar to the SAT. Both tests contain Reading and Writing and Math sections.

What do tutors teach in PSAT Math and Reading and Writing?
The digital PSAT/NMSQT has two sections. Each section contains two adaptive modules. Performance on the first module affects the general difficulty of the second.
PSAT Reading and Writing
PSAT Reading and Writing tutoring may cover:

Standard English conventions
Students work with short passages and one question at a time. They may need to identify evidence, make an inference, select a transition, or correct grammar.
A tutor should separate reading mistakes from task mistakes. A student may understand the passage but misread what the question asks.
For National Merit preparation, small Reading and Writing gains can have extra value because that section is doubled in the Selection Index formula.
PSAT Math
PSAT Math tutoring may cover:

Problem-solving and data analysis
Geometry and trigonometry
The calculator is available throughout the Math section, including the built-in Desmos calculator. Calculator access does not remove the need for number sense and equation setup.
An effective PSAT Math tutor should review when Desmos saves time and when it creates extra work. The student must still translate the problem into a usable mathematical form.
