How does it work?

How We Match You With the Right Tutor

Four Steps to Hire Tutor

Icon

How does it work?

How We Match You With the Right Tutor

How we match you with an online PSAT tutor

Most students start with one session per week. After the first month, we adjust frequency based on how much your student has improved and how close they are to the test date.

Our Promise

Most tutoring searches dump you into a marketplace with 10,000 profiles. We do the matching. Here's what the process looks like.

Hire Your PSAT Tutor

  1. 1

    Tell us about your student

In a brief phone call, we ask about your student's current PSAT score, target score, weak sections, and schedule. This conversation takes about 15 minutes and is free.

  2. 2

We select two or three tutors

Based on what you told us, we recommend one tutor from our roster who specializes in your student's weak areas and whose teaching style fits your student's learning pace. We explain why this tutor is the right choice.

  3. 3

    First session for $50

The first session is free. Your student and tutor meet online, cover a practice problem or two, and both of you get a sense of whether the fit is right.

  4. 4

Adjust if the match is wrong

If the first tutor isn't the right match, we'll introduce you to another tutor. No penalty, no extended contract, no questions asked. The match matters more than locking in early.

What Happens During a PSAT Tutoring Session

Sessions are one-on-one, online, and happen on Zoom or another platform of your choice. Each session is typically 60 or 90 minutes, scheduled at a time that works for your student and your tutor.

A typical session starts with a diagnostic. Your tutor reviews your student's recent practice test, identifies where points are being lost (Reading and Writing section, Math section, or both), and pinpoints the exact question types or concepts causing trouble. This focus is what private tutoring does better than self-study or large courses.

Your tutor then teaches or re-teaches the concept using practice problems from real PSAT exams. Your student works through a problem while your tutor watches, asks questions, and corrects misconceptions in real time. If your student gets stuck, your tutor guides them without giving away the answer.

Before the session ends, your tutor assigns homework: usually three to five practice problems on the same concept, due before the next session. Between sessions, your tutor is available by email if your student has a quick question.

We share score reports and progress notes with parents weekly. You'll see your student's improvement tracked over time and get a sense of which sections are moving fastest.

How to Choose a PSAT Tutor: What Actually Matters

1. Does the tutor know the PSAT specifically? The PSAT is not just a practice SAT. It has a narrower scope in some areas (less advanced math, for example) and emphasizes reading comprehension and grammar slightly differently. A tutor who tutors "standardized tests" without PSAT specialization may miss these nuances. Ask: "How many PSAT students have you taught, and what score improvement did they see?"

2. Does the tutor have a high personal score? A 1500+ SAT score matters because it means the tutor has seen the challenging questions and solved them under time pressure. Lower-scoring tutors can still teach, but they've never been on the other side of a difficult problem on test day.

3. Can the tutor diagnose your student's specific weak spot? Some students miss reading questions. Others lose time on math. The best tutors take a practice test, spend 20 minutes analyzing it, and tell you exactly which question type is costing you the most points. Tutors who teach generic "test strategies" without this diagnosis are less effective.

4. Does the tutor care about the timeline? If your student takes the PSAT in October and it's already August, intensity and pace matter. A tutor who spaces out lessons too far apart won't build momentum. Ask how many sessions per week they recommend.

5. Does the tutor get student access to practice materials? Official College Board PSAT practice tests exist. A good tutor will assign and review those, not just generic practice questions.

6. Can you change tutors if the match is wrong? Private tutoring works only if the student trusts the tutor. If after three sessions your student is frustrated or unfocused, you should be able to switch without penalty. We allow this option option. Some tutoring services lock you in.

NAT does not automatically win on every criterion. For instance, some students do better with a peer tutor (a college student close to their age) than a more senior tutor. A peer tutor from a top university might be more relatable. If that's your student's style, say so in the consultation call, and we'll match accordingly.

Private Tutoring vs. Other Options for PSAT Prep

Free resources like Khan Academy are genuinely useful for review, and a student who is close on one unit may not need a tutor at all. Private physics tutoring earns its cost when the gap is conceptual, when the branch is specialized, or when a target exam score is on the line.

Is Private PSAT Tutoring Right for Your Student?

Right for:

  • Students with a diagnosed weak section (e.g., math consistently drops 20+ points)

  • Students with test anxiety who freeze under timed conditions

  • Students targeting a 1400+ score for National Merit qualification

  • Students on a compressed timeline (less than 3 months to the test)

  • Students who've tried self-study or group tutoring and plateaued

  • Families wanting a personalized study plan, not generic lessons

Not right for:

  • Students who haven't taken a practice test yet (start with a free diagnostic first)

  • Students needing only 10 points to hit their goal (free College Board materials and practice usually suffice)

  • Students without time to commit to homework between sessions (tutoring relies on practice between lessons; tutors can't be everything)

  • Families on a tight budget who can do self-study with free materials (one-on-one costs more than other options and is worth it only when a specific barrier exists)

Real Student Outcomes

Private tutoring works. Our tutors have helped hundreds of high school students raise PSAT scores and qualify for National Merit recognition. You'll find verified stories from real NAT students at our success stories page, including before-and-after scores and specific improvements.

One example: a sophomore who scored 1320 on a first practice PSAT worked with a tutor for two months (one session per week) on math fundamentals and test strategy. She improved to 1480 by fall, qualified for National Merit, and built momentum for SAT prep the following year.

Each success story reflects a student's effort plus a tutor's expertise. We don't guarantee score improvements (no tutoring service should), but we track progress carefully and adjust the tutoring plan if a strategy isn't working.

FAQ’s

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does PSAT tutoring cost?

Rates range from $60 to $150 per hour, depending on tutor experience and the package you choose. A typical package runs $400–$1,200 for a summer of prep (four sessions per week for eight weeks). You can also do ongoing tutoring at one to two sessions per week. See our full pricing page for package details and what's included in each level.

How soon should my student start PSAT tutoring?

Ideally, start one to three months before your student takes the PSAT. If the PSAT is in October, begin tutoring in July, August, or September. If your student is starting earlier to build a foundation before taking the test in junior year, that's also fine. The earlier you start, the less intense the weekly schedule needs to be.

How often do students need tutoring?

Most students improve fastest with one to two sessions per week. A single weekly session over a longer period (say, 12 weeks) works fine if you're not on a tight timeline. Twice-weekly sessions are useful for a compressed eight-week push. Talk to your tutor about what your student needs.

What if my student doesn't click with the tutor?

You can change tutors at any time without penalty. The first session is free, so you and your student can test the fit. If after one or two paid sessions the match isn't right, just let us know, and we'll introduce you to another tutor. No contracts. No fees.

Is PSAT tutoring online or in person?

All sessions are online, conducted on Zoom or another platform of your choice. This means you can work with any tutor in our roster no matter where you live, and your student can attend from home, a coffee shop, or anywhere with internet.

What about homework and practice tests between sessions?

Your tutor assigns 3–5 practice problems after each session, due before the next lesson. Every few weeks, your tutor will also recommend a full-length official PSAT practice test to measure progress. Your student isn't expected to study 10 hours a week; homework should take 30–60 minutes between sessions. The tutor reviews homework at the start of the next session.

Does my student need to have taken the PSAT already to start tutoring?

No. Your student can start tutoring before taking the first PSAT. The tutor will give a diagnostic practice test during the first session to identify weak areas and build a targeted plan. However, if your student has already taken the PSAT, bring that score report to the first session; the tutor will use it to diagnose weak spots faster.

How is this different from self-study or free practice materials?

Free College Board materials are real and valuable, but they come without diagnosis or personalized feedback. Self-study works for some students but not for those with time pressure, test anxiety, or a specific weak section. Private tutoring adds a person who watches your student work, identifies why they're missing questions, and teaches or re-teaches in response. This adaptive, real-time feedback is what tutoring does that self-study doesn't.
