Pre-algebra and algebra
Pre-algebra and Algebra I are where many students first decide they're "not a math person." That story is almost always wrong, and it's almost always fixable. NAT algebra tutors focus on the foundational skills that every higher-level math subject depends on: variables, linear equations, inequalities, and functions.
Algebra II adds systems of equations, quadratics, exponentials, and logarithms. Students who do well in Algebra I often struggle here. The diagnostic finds exactly which concept is causing the break, and we rebuild from there.
Geometry and trigonometry
Proof-writing is one of the most challenging topics in high school math. NAT geometry tutors break down two-column proofs, coordinate geometry, and triangle theorems into clear, repeatable steps. Trigonometry sessions cover the unit circle, identities, inverse functions, and their applications in pre-calculus.
Pre-calculus and calculus
Whether your child is preparing for AP Calculus AB or BC, our tutors have the expertise to help them succeed. SAT Math and ACT Math
The SAT Math section and ACT Math section test specific skills in specific formats. A student can earn an A in Algebra II and still score below 600 on the SAT Math section. The two things are related but not the same.

Statistics and AP-level courses

9th grade math
Ninth grade is usually Algebra I or Geometry, sometimes both. It's also where students form lasting impressions about whether math is something they can do. A strong 9th grade year sets the trajectory for everything that follows.
10th grade math
By 10th grade, most students are in Geometry or moving into Algebra II. Proof-based reasoning and abstract thinking land harder here than in any other year. Students who struggle in 10th grade math often have a Foundation Gap in their algebra, not a problem with geometry itself. The diagnostic finds it quickly.
11th grade math

The 3-gap diagnostic: Why most math students plateau
After working with thousands of math students, NAT tutors identified three distinct knowledge gaps that cause students to stall, regardless of subject or grade level. Most tutoring services treat every struggling student the same way: review the chapter, redo the homework, repeat. NAT does something different. In the first session, your tutor identifies which of these three gaps is the primary driver of the problem and builds a plan around it.
The Foundation Gap. The student is missing a pre-algebra or early-algebra skill that everything above it depends on. They may be in Pre-Calculus but can’t reliably factor a quadratic. Sessions above this gap build on sand. Closing a Foundation Gap two levels down often produces faster progress than reviewing the current chapter directly.
The Translation Gap. The student understands the math but can’t convert word problems or real-world scenarios into equations. This gap is one of the most common causes of low SAT Math scores and is almost never addressed by classroom instruction. Students with a Translation Gap often feel like they “know the math” but keep getting wrong answers. They’re right. They do know the math. The translation is what’s failing.
The Strategy Gap. The student knows the content but freezes under time pressure or makes consistent small errors on tests that don’t appear in homework. This is a test-execution problem, not a content problem. Students with a Strategy Gap don’t need more content review. They need a different approach to pacing, question selection, and error patterns.
Most students who struggle have one dominant gap. Identifying it changes everything.
