Calculus-based physics is the point where a tutor either has done university physics or has not, and no amount of exam familiarity substitutes. These three have, and each has an open profile you can read before booking. That last part matters more than it sounds: one competitor on this search lists eight tutors with real degrees and gives you no way to find out which of them you would get.

The year physics gets rewritten in calculus
The most common thing a parent says about AP Physics C is that their child was good at physics until this year. That is usually accurate, and it is also not what happened.
AP Physics C is not harder physics than AP Physics 1. It is largely the same mechanics, rewritten in the language of calculus, and that is a different skill rather than a harder version of the same one. Velocity stops being a formula and becomes a derivative. Work stops being force times distance and becomes an integral. A student who learned physics as a set of equations to select between now has to derive the equation, and nothing in an algebra-based course asked them to do that.
Two things then happen at once, which is what makes it feel like a wall. The physics and the calculus have to run simultaneously, often while the student is still learning the calculus in another classroom. And the exam stops rewarding recall almost entirely, because a derivation cannot be memorised in any useful quantity.
Neither problem is a ceiling. Both are teachable, and both take a tutor who has actually done physics in this form.
What a 12th grade physics tutor actually works on
Sessions follow the student's own course and calendar, whether that is AP Physics C, IB Physics at standard or higher level, an honors or post-AP course, or Ontario's SPH4U.
AP Physics C Mechanics runs seven units, from kinematics through force and translational dynamics, work and energy, linear momentum, torque and rotational dynamics, energy and momentum of rotating systems, and oscillations. The College Board recommends that students have taken calculus or be taking it at the same time, and describes the course as equivalent to a semester of introductory calculus-based college physics. That recommendation is the single most useful sentence in this whole page for a family deciding anything, and it is worth reading twice.
Where the marks actually move late in the year:
Derivation technique. Producing a result from a starting principle rather than recalling it, and writing it so a marker can follow the reasoning.
Rotational dynamics and oscillations, which arrive late in the course when time is shortest and which almost always need dedicated work.
The calculus itself, where the physics is understood and the integration or differentiation is the obstacle. This is more common than students admit and faster to fix than they expect.
Electricity and magnetism, for students taking the second AP Physics C course, where the vector calculus is the genuine difficulty rather than the physics.

IB Physics is structured differently and worth setting out, because no competitor on this search explains it. The current DP course is organised around three concepts that run through everything, forces, energy and particles, across five broad themes, with mathematics and data analysis treated as essential tools rather than as support. Practical work runs from closed to open inquiry and culminates in two assessed components: an interdisciplinary collaborative sciences project addressing a real-world problem, and an assessed independent research paper.
Those two assessed components are the strategic fact of an IB physics year, because they are the parts not written under exam conditions. Work on them early is worth more per hour than revision in April.
What sits outside the scope: nobody here will write an internal assessment, draft a research paper, complete a take-home assessment, or help a student pass off AI-generated work as their own. A tutor will teach the physics an investigation demonstrates and argue about whether the conclusion follows from the data. Producing the document would put a diploma at risk.
Hamza Kalim read physics at Bates College and took a graduate physics degree at the University of Oxford, and begins a PhD in Theoretical and Mathematical Physics at the University of Pittsburgh. His research has covered particle physics, an ultracold atomic laboratory, fluid dynamics, chaos theory, cosmology, and gravitation. He also prepares students for Oxford interviews, which is a useful qualification for the specific thing AP Physics C asks of a student.
What sessions actually look like
One hour, online, a single student with a single tutor, whiteboard open throughout. Senior physics leans on that whiteboard harder than any other subject on this site, because a derivation has to be built line by line while the student watches and then rebuilt by the student while the tutor says nothing at all.
Three things are needed from you: the course or textbook name, the two most recent marked assessments, and every fixed date, which here means the exam, any internal assessment deadline, and the start of any university course already accepted.
Those marked papers do the diagnostic work. In senior physics the tutor is separating three things that look identical from the outside: a student who does not understand the physics, one who understands it and cannot do the calculus, and one who can do both and cannot write a derivation a marker will award marks for.
Homework stays deliberately small. Three problems worked slowly with every step written out will move a grade further than twenty attempted quickly, which mostly rehearses the habit causing the problem.
Where physics and calculus need holding together, one tutor can often do both. Several people on the math tutor roster also teach AP Physics, and at this level that overlap is the whole point rather than a convenience.
What first-year university physics assumes
The Grade 12 hub describes this course as "the mechanics and electromagnetism that engineering and science majors start from", and no competitor page on this search addresses what that actually means.
The College Board describes AP Physics C Mechanics as equivalent to a semester of introductory calculus-based college physics. That equivalence cuts both ways. A student who genuinely masters it arrives at university having already done the first course, which is an enormous advantage. A student who scraped a 3 arrives having been examined on that course and not learned it, and then takes it again at double the pace with a professor who assumes the AP score meant something.
The gap that causes trouble is derivation fluency rather than content coverage. First-year engineering physics moves through mechanics quickly because it assumes students can construct results rather than look them up, and the students who struggle are usually the ones who passed by pattern-matching problem types. That habit is invisible in a high school grade and obvious by the second midterm.
It matters more for some students than others. Anyone heading into engineering, physics, computer science with a physics requirement, or a pre-med track meeting physics in first or second year will sit that course. For a student going elsewhere, the exam genuinely is the finish line and this section does not apply to them.
A lot of seniors are still chasing a test score while all this is going on, and autumn sittings exist for both the SAT and the ACT.

What 12th grade physics tutoring costs
The first hour costs $50 and is spent working out what is actually wrong. The published high school rates beyond it are package based: fifteen lessons at $915, which is $61 each, or twenty at $1,180, which is $59 each. Upgrade within 48 hours of the diagnostic and the $50 comes off the package.
Package length is the only variable. AP Physics C carries no premium over any other course, and no tutor on the roster costs more than another.
This is the one search in the hierarchy where NAT is clearly the cheaper option, so it is worth being specific. Of the two brand competitors publishing rates for AP Physics C, one runs $480 for four lessons, $880 for eight, and $1,200 for twelve, which works out between $100 and $120 a lesson. The other charges $948 for twelve hours, or $79 an hour. Marketplaces sit lower, from roughly $20 an hour with no published screening standard and no way to know who arrives.
At $59 to $61, NAT is the lowest published rate from any provider on this search that names its tutors at all. That is not an argument to buy on price. It is an argument that on this particular search you are not paying a premium for the individual detail.
How to choose a 12th grade physics tutor
Six things to establish before paying anyone for calculus-based physics, this provider included.
Has the tutor done university physics? This is the whole question at AP Physics C level and most of the others are downstream of it. Someone who scored a 5 four years ago and has not touched physics since is not the same proposition as someone doing it now.
Can you find out which specific tutor you get? Naming a roster is not the same as naming an assignment. One competitor here lists eight tutors including two doctorates and gives you no way to request any of them. Ask directly, before paying.
Will they diagnose the calculus separately? A student can be excellent at physics and stuck because integration is unfamiliar. A tutor who does not check that will spend six weeks teaching the wrong subject.
Can they teach derivation, not just problem solving? Ask how they get a student to produce a result from a starting principle. A vague answer means they teach worked examples, and worked examples are not what this exam marks.
How fast can they start, and what does speed cost? A marketplace tutor starts tonight at a third of the price. With an exam in weeks that is a genuine trade-off, and it deserves weighing rather than dismissing.
Do they hold a teaching qualification? The tutors here are physicists and engineers rather than licensed classroom teachers. For a student with an IEP or a diagnosed learning difference, a provider staffed by certified teachers is usually the better choice, and at least one competitor on this search addresses that explicitly. We will say so on the first call.
Numbers 5 and 6 are the two where somebody else regularly wins, and number 6 is one where a named competitor is genuinely better set up than we are.

Where grade 12 physics sits at the end of the sequence
This is the final science course in the hierarchy and, for an engineering-bound student, the one that most directly becomes their first-year timetable.
What it is built on
Senior physics assumes two separate foundations, and only one of them is physics.
The physics half runs back through 11th grade physics, where AP Physics 1 and 2 material is usually taught and where the habit of multi-step quantitative reasoning was supposed to form. Below that sits 10th grade physics, where forces and energy were first met properly, and 9th grade physics, where unit tracking and graph reading became graded skills.
The mathematics half matters just as much and gets less attention. 11th grade math at pre-calculus level is what makes senior calculus possible, and 10th grade math built the algebraic fluency underneath all of it. A student shaky in either will read a derivation as physics they cannot do.
Chemistry occasionally intrudes too, particularly in thermodynamics, so students who found 11th grade chemistry hard sometimes meet the same discomfort here. Where several foundations are weak at once, the grade 11 program is a more honest starting point than another senior-year physics package.
What is running alongside it this year
Almost every AP Physics C student is also taking 12th grade math at calculus level, and for many the calculus is running slightly behind the physics that needs it. That is the single most common structural problem on this page, and it is worth naming when you enquire.
The science-bound frequently add 12th grade chemistry or 12th grade biology, and a student carrying two AP sciences plus calculus plus applications needs help with sequencing before content.
The rest of the load is real. Beyond the sciences, the full grade 12 subject list sets out everything else a senior is carrying, from English and computer science to the application essays that swallow the autumn term. If three or four things are slipping together, start at the grade 12 hub rather than with physics.
What comes after it
For most students on this page, a first-year university physics course, which is the next section and the reason this page is written the way it is.

Families with a younger child in the sequence start further back, at grade 9. The 9th grade math foundation is the one that matters most for anyone who will meet calculus-based physics four years later, and the grade 9 electives fill out the rest of that timetable.
A year later, the grade 10 program covers the sophomore load including its other subjects, and the 10th grade chemistry taken alongside it is where quantitative science habits usually either form or fail.
AP Physics C or IB Physics, and what each one marks
By senior year the course is chosen, so the question is what each one rewards.
AP Physics C is calculus-based and the College Board recommends students have taken calculus or be taking it concurrently. Mechanics covers seven units ending in rotational dynamics and oscillations, both of which arrive late and account for a disproportionate share of lost marks. Many students take Electricity and Magnetism as a second course, where vector calculus rather than the physics is usually the obstacle.

IB Physics distributes things differently. AP or IB, and what each exam actually rewards
By senior year the course is chosen, so the question is no longer which but what each one marks.
AP Chemistry is a single exam on a fixed date across nine units, with the College Board recommending prior chemistry and Algebra II as preparation. The last three units, thermodynamics and electrochemistry among them, carry disproportionate weight in both difficulty and marks, and late in the year most recoverable points sit in free-response justification rather than in content.
Work through the free material first, because it costs nothing and it will tell you a great deal. IB Chemistry distributes the grade differently, and that distribution is the strategic fact of an IB senior year. The current course is built on two organising concepts, Structure and Reactivity, and the IB describes practical work as central to it. The internal assessment is a scientific investigation and carries a substantial share of the final grade, which makes it the only meaningful part not written under exam conditions.
For an IB student the implication is straightforward: hours spent early on the investigation are worth more than the same hours spent revising in April. A tutor cannot write any part of it and should refuse to, but can argue about whether the research question is answerable in the time available and whether the conclusion is supported by the data collected.

Grade 12 physics help, five options compared
Two of those cost nothing, and for a single topic re-explained the free video is better value than any tutor including ours. The row worth reading twice is the last one: at roughly double the price, at least one of those providers is better set up than we are for a student who needs formal accommodation.
Who this is right for, and who it is not
A good fit when:
AP Physics C is going badly and the student was strong in algebra-based physics
The physics is understood and the calculus is the obstacle, or the other way round
Derivations are where marks disappear rather than arithmetic
Rotational dynamics or oscillations arrived late and never landed
An IB collaborative sciences project or research paper is coming
Engineering, physics, or computer science is the plan and first-year physics is the real deadline
The family wants a named, checkable tutor rather than a roster
Not a good fit when:
The exam is three weeks away and calculus has not been started. That cannot be fixed in three weeks and anyone claiming otherwise is selling.
The student needs formal accommodation or an IEP-aligned approach. A certified teacher service is the better call and one competitor on this search is explicitly set up for it.
One topic needs re-explaining. Free video does that better and costs nothing.
What is wanted is help producing an internal assessment, a research paper, or AI-generated work presented as the student's own.
The student is not going anywhere near physics again and the exam is already sat.

Every tutor named here has a profile you can open now: a physics graduate of Bates and Oxford beginning a theoretical physics PhD, a Harvey Mudd tutor with over nine years of experience teaching physics and college-level calculus, and a Cornell chemical engineer with classroom teaching experience. No test scores are claimed for any of them on this page, because none of the three profiles publishes one. Other pages on this site do claim scores for two of these tutors, and that conflict is unresolved. It is listed in Section N and it should be fixed before this page goes live, because a visitor who clicks a profile and finds a different claim has learned something about the site rather than about the tutor.
Set against those three people are the company-wide figures, which prove considerably less. North American Tutors states over 59,950 lessons taught, over 4,950 students in 30-plus countries, and a 92 percent rate of students improving by two or more letter grades or 90 or more SAT points. That percentage arrives with no cohort, no timeframe, and no methodology, which makes it a marketing figure rather than an audited one.
Two absences worth naming. No physics case study exists: the published student case studies are real and detailed and every one is SAT, ACT, or MCAT. And there is no third-party review presence on this site at all, while competitors on this search carry per-tutor review counts. That is a genuine disadvantage and it is why no stars appear anywhere on this page.
