12th grade chemistry tutor: AP and IB Chemistry through the exam
North American Tutors matches your senior with a chemistry tutor who has already been examined on this material at a harder level than they will be. The roster includes a 523 MCAT scorer at the 100th percentile, a graduate engineer who took fifteen AP courses and scored 4 or 5 on every one, and a pre-med statistician who took eighteen. You see the name and the profile before you pay.
Meet your Grade 12 chemistry tutors
Every other provider on this search will tell you how many hours they have delivered, how many reviews they hold, or what percentage of applicants they reject. None of them will tell you who is going to teach your child. These three will be, and each has been tested on this material well past the level a senior faces, which is the only qualification that transfers.
You can browse all verified math tutors, filter by subject and grade level, and read full credentials in our Chemistry tutors directory.
The course that gets examined twice
Senior chemistry is the only high school course that gets tested twice, and almost nobody prepares for the second one.
The first examination is the obvious one: an AP paper in May, an IB session, or a final that decides a transcript line and sometimes a conditional offer. Everything a family buys in senior year is usually aimed at it.
The second arrives about four months later, in the opening weeks of a university general chemistry course, and it is unannounced. That course does not re-teach equilibrium, thermodynamics, or stoichiometry. It assumes all of it is automatic and then moves at roughly double the pace, and first-year chemistry attrition is largely made of students who passed the first examination and were not ready for the second.
The two need different work. Exam preparation is triage: highest-yield units, technique, and marks the student is closest to earning. Foundation work is the opposite, slow and unglamorous and aimed at making things automatic rather than recoverable. Deciding which one you are buying should happen in the first hour, deliberately.
What a 12th grade chemistry tutor actually works on
Sessions follow the student's own course and calendar, whether that is AP Chemistry, IB Chemistry at standard or higher level, a post-AP or honors course, or Ontario's SCH4U.
For AP Chemistry, the College Board recommends prior chemistry and Algebra II, and the course runs nine units ending in thermodynamics and electrochemistry. Late in senior year the recoverable marks are rarely in fresh content:
Equilibrium, thermodynamics, and electrochemistry. Our hardest AP Chemistry units guide names these three as the ones that decide scores, and all three reward reasoning about systems rather than recall.
Free-response technique. Justifying a claim, showing the reasoning that earns method marks, and answering the question asked rather than the one revised for.
Stoichiometry that should be automatic by now but often is not. The stoichiometry guide is the fastest diagnostic available for whether the foundation is genuinely solid, and it takes twenty minutes.
Targeted content repair aimed at what a marked script actually shows is weak, rather than a full re-teach nobody has time for.
For IB Chemistry the structure is different and worth setting out, because most pages list it and explain nothing. The current DP course is organised around two concepts, Structure, meaning the nature of matter from simple to complex forms, and Reactivity, meaning how and why chemical reactions occur. Practical work is described by the IB as central to the course, and the internal assessment is a scientific investigation carrying a substantial share of the final grade.
The practical consequence for an IB senior is the same one that applies in biology: the internal assessment is the part of the grade not written under time pressure, so an hour spent on it early is worth more than an hour spent revising in April.
What sits outside the scope, and this is stated plainly because one competitor on this search addresses it and the rest do not: nobody here will write an internal assessment, draft a lab report, or work a take-home assessment alongside a student, and nobody will help a student pass off AI-generated work as their own. A tutor will teach the chemistry an investigation demonstrates and interrogate whether the conclusion follows from the data. Producing the document would put a diploma at risk under academic honesty rules.
Aryan Waghmode read Neuroscience at Johns Hopkins and scored 523 on the MCAT, which is the 100th percentile, alongside a 1540 SAT. He researches biomaterials for space medicine, founded a health tech startup, and has mentored more than thirty students into top universities. Because the MCAT's chemistry is essentially university general chemistry under time pressure, he has an unusual vantage point on what senior year is actually preparing students for.
What university general chemistry actually assumes
The Grade 12 hub promises "the fundamentals college general chemistry builds on", and no competitor page on this search addresses that at all. It is worth being specific about, because it is the part of senior year with the longest consequences.
A first-year general chemistry course does not begin at the beginning. It assumes stoichiometry, the mole, and unit conversion are automatic rather than recallable, and it assumes equilibrium and thermodynamics are familiar enough to be extended rather than introduced. Then it moves at roughly twice the pace of a high school course, with less contact time and no one checking whether the class is keeping up.
The gap is usually speed, not knowledge. A senior who can do a multi-step calculation correctly in six minutes has passed high school chemistry and will struggle in a first-year midterm where the same problem is worth two minutes. That distinction almost never shows up in a school grade, which is why families are surprised in October.
It also matters more for some students than others. Anyone heading into medicine, engineering, life sciences, chemistry, pharmacy, or nursing meets general chemistry in first year, frequently as a course that filters. For a student going into humanities or business, the exam is genuinely the finish line and this section does not apply.
For seniors on the pre-med track specifically, the sequence continues past the degree. The MCAT program is staffed by tutors who came through exactly this route, including one named on this page, and the chemistry sections of that exam are the same material examined a third time.
Plenty of seniors are still sitting standardised tests through all of this, and autumn dates run for both the SAT and the ACT.
Either test can be worked on one-to-one, through the SAT tutor roster or the ACT tutor roster. For a senior weighing up which score is worth another attempt, our SAT and ACT comparison lays out what actually differs.
What 12th grade chemistry tutoring costs
Fifty dollars buys the first hour, and that hour is a diagnosis rather than a pitch. The published high school rates beyond that are package based: fifteen lessons at $915, which is $61 each, or twenty at $1,180, which is $59 each. Upgrade within 48 hours of the diagnostic and the $50 comes off the package.
Package length is the only variable in that. There is no AP or IB surcharge, and no price difference between one tutor on the roster and another.
The market at this level is worth describing accurately, because two of the competitors on this search publish and three do not. The strongest of them charges $90 CAD an hour for online sessions and $120 CAD in person, which puts it modestly above the rates above once converted. Another advertises programs starting at $1,990 without an hourly figure attached. Marketplaces sit lower, from roughly $15 to $20 an hour with no published screening standard.
Where NAT sits is unremarkable, and that is the point. This page is not arguing that the rate is lower. It is arguing that at a broadly similar price, you can find out who will teach your child before you pay, which is not true of the two competitors publishing rates alongside us.
How to choose a 12th grade chemistry tutor
Six things to establish before paying anyone in senior year, this provider included.
Can you find out who teaches before you pay? Ask directly. Aggregate proof, whether that is hours delivered, reviews collected, or a screening percentage, tells you about a company rather than about the person in the session. Both are useful. Only one of them is who your child actually sits with.
Has the tutor been examined on this past the level your child faces? Senior chemistry is taught differently by someone who has since done university general chemistry, an MCAT, or engineering thermodynamics, because they know which shortcuts break later.
Will they say the timeline is too short? The most useful thing a senior-year provider can tell you is that the goal is not reachable. A provider who never says it either has not met that situation or is not being straight with you.
Do they distinguish exam preparation from foundation work? Those are different purchases with different timelines. A provider who treats them as the same thing is selling you one and calling it the other.
How fast can they start, and what does speed cost? A marketplace tutor starts tonight at a fifth of the price. With an exam in weeks that is a genuine trade-off and it deserves weighing rather than dismissing.
Do they hold a teaching qualification? The tutors here are subject specialists and researchers rather than licensed classroom teachers. For a student with an IEP or a diagnosed learning difference, a provider staffed by certified teachers is usually the better choice, and that is what we will say on the first call.
Numbers 5 and 6 are the two we lose on regularly, and number 1 is the one where several competitors here would rather you did not ask.
Kendra Kim studies Statistics at the University of Chicago while completing the pre-med sequence, having taken eighteen AP courses in high school and dual enrolled in Georgia Tech's mathematics program. She competed at AMC and AIME level and works as a research assistant at UChicago Medicine's AKI Lab. She is currently sitting the university chemistry sequence that seniors are about to meet, which makes her useful on the question of what actually transfers.
You tell us the course, the grade, and both deadlines.
Not "chemistry help", but "AP Chemistry, equilibrium test came back at 64, exam in May, and she is starting a chemical engineering degree in September." Senior year has two horizons and the plan changes depending on which one matters.
2
A person picks the tutor.
Exam triage and foundation building need different people, and so does a student whose problem is calculation speed rather than chemistry. You get a name and a profile link before anything is booked, and the person named is the person who teaches, which is the standard the whole tutor directory runs on.
3
The $50 diagnostic hour.
Sixty minutes establishing which of the two jobs in Block 5 you are buying, and whether the timeline supports it. If it does not, that gets said in the hour rather than after four sessions.
4
Personalized sessions with progress reports.
Based on the diagnostic, the tutor builds a session-by-session plan. Your child gets bi-weekly progress updates. If the match is not right, we change it for free.
Where grade 12 chemistry sits at the end of the sequence
This is the last chemistry course before somebody else assumes it is known, which changes what a weak grade costs.
What it is built on
Senior chemistry assumes three earlier years held, and gaps in any of them surface here looking like a senior-year problem.
The immediate foundation is 11th grade chemistry, where equilibrium and thermodynamics were introduced and where the shift from calculation to reasoning was supposed to happen. Underneath that sits 10th grade chemistry, where the mole and stoichiometry were first taught, and further back 9th grade chemistry, where atomic structure and bonding began.
A stoichiometry gap from sophomore year does not stay a sophomore problem. It reappears in every equilibrium calculation a senior attempts, which is why the diagnostic hour usually starts two years earlier than families expect.
The quantitative foundation matters just as much. 11th grade math built the algebra that equilibrium and thermodynamics assume, and students who took 11th grade physics have already been graded on multi-step quantitative reasoning under exam conditions. Where several of these are shaky, the grade 11 program is a more honest starting point than another senior-year package.
What is running alongside it this year
Senior year is short of attention rather than content, and that constrains any plan more than the chemistry does.
Most students taking senior chemistry also carry 12th grade math at calculus level, and the science-bound frequently add 12th grade biology or 12th grade physics. Students carrying two AP sciences plus applications need help with sequencing before they need help with content.
The rest of the load is real. The full grade 12 subject list covers English, computer science, social sciences, and the college essay work that consumes autumn. When several things wobble at once, the grade 12 hub is a better starting point than any single subject page.
What comes after it
For most students, a university general chemistry course, which is covered in the next section and is the reason this page exists in the form it does.
The whole four-year path is mapped on the high school tutoring hub, which is the right link for a family planning the sequence rather than rescuing its final year.
For a younger sibling still inside it, that sequence starts at grade 9. Two courses there build the quantitative habits senior chemistry later takes for granted: 9th grade math for the algebra, and 9th grade physics for unit tracking under exam conditions.
The grade 9 electives fill out the rest of that timetable.
A year later, the grade 10 program covers the sophomore load including its other subjects. That is also the year 10th grade math builds the rearrangement fluency stoichiometry quietly depends on.
What sessions actually look like
Sixty minutes, online, one tutor to one student, with the whiteboard open from the start. Senior chemistry leans on it constantly: ICE tables, energy diagrams, titration curves, and cell schematics all get built line by line while the student watches, then rebuilt by the student while the tutor stays quiet.
Three things are needed from you: the course or textbook name, the two most recent marked assessments, and every fixed date, which at this stage means the exam, any internal assessment deadline, and the start date of any university course already accepted.
Almost all of the diagnosis comes out of those marked papers. In senior chemistry the tutor is usually separating a student who does not know the material from one who knows it and cannot produce it fast enough, and the second is both more common and faster to fix.
Homework stays narrow. Four equilibrium problems worked slowly with reasoning written out will move a grade further than thirty attempted quickly, which mostly rehearses whatever habit is causing the problem.
Where chemistry and biology are tangled in the biochemistry content, one tutor can often hold both. Several people on the biology tutor roster also teach AP Chemistry.
AP or IB, and what each exam actually rewards
By senior year the course is chosen, so the question is no longer which but what each one marks.
AP Chemistry is a single exam on a fixed date across nine units, with the College Board recommending prior chemistry and Algebra II as preparation. The last three units, thermodynamics and electrochemistry among them, carry disproportionate weight in both difficulty and marks, and late in the year most recoverable points sit in free-response justification rather than in content.
Work through the free material first, because it costs nothing and it will tell you a great deal. The AP Chemistry resource hub indexes cheat sheets for all nine units plus a formula sheet, none of it behind a signup, and the chemical reactions cheat sheet is a fast way to check whether the reaction chemistry underneath everything else is solid.
IB Chemistry distributes the grade differently, and that distribution is the strategic fact of an IB senior year. The current course is built on two organising concepts, Structure and Reactivity, and the IB describes practical work as central to it. The internal assessment is a scientific investigation and carries a substantial share of the final grade, which makes it the only meaningful part not written under exam conditions.
For an IB student the implication is straightforward: hours spent early on the investigation are worth more than the same hours spent revising in April. A tutor cannot write any part of it and should refuse to, but can argue about whether the research question is answerable in the time available and whether the conclusion is supported by the data collected.
When self-study stops being enough, NAT's AP tutoring covers every AP subject on the roster, and several chemistry tutors here teach AP Biology or AP Physics alongside it, which matters for a senior carrying two AP sciences.
Grade 12 chemistry help, five options compared
Two of those cost nothing, and if your senior needs one topic re-explained the free video is better value than any tutor including ours. Pay when the question is what is still achievable, or when September is the real deadline and nobody has mentioned it.
Who this is right for, and who it is not
A good fit when:
An AP or IB exam is coming and the current grade does not reflect what the student knows
A final grade or predicted grade is attached to a college offer
The student is heading into medicine, engineering, life sciences, pharmacy, or nursing, where general chemistry is a first-year filter
The problem is speed rather than understanding
An IB internal assessment is coming and the research question is not settled
The family wants a named, checkable tutor rather than an aggregate statistic
Not a good fit when:
The exam is three weeks away and three units are missing. Technique can be sharpened that fast; a foundation cannot.
The student needs formal accommodation or an IEP-aligned approach.
One topic needs re-explaining. Free video does that better and costs nothing.
What is wanted is help producing an internal assessment, a lab report, or AI-generated work presented as the student's own. That is an academic honesty problem and no tutor here will touch it.
The student is heading into a degree with no chemistry in it and the exam is already done.
What we can show you, and what we cannot
The evidence and its limits together, which is not how this category usually works.
Every tutor named here has a profile you can open now, and the credentials are checkable in a few minutes: a 523 MCAT at the 100th percentile from a Johns Hopkins neuroscience graduate, a 36 ACT and fifteen AP courses at 4 or 5 from a graduate engineer, and eighteen AP courses plus a university pre-med chemistry sequence in progress. Those are statements about three specific people rather than about a company.
Alongside those individuals sit company-wide numbers, and they are a weaker kind of evidence. North American Tutors reports more than 59,950 lessons delivered, more than 4,950 students across upwards of 30 countries, and a 92 percent figure for students gaining two or more letter grades or 90 or more SAT points. No cohort size accompanies that percentage, no measurement window, and no method.
That caveat applies to the competition as well, and it is worth saying out loud. The strongest provider on this search publishes a 95 percent score improvement figure and another advertises a three percent screening acceptance rate. Neither comes with a method either, and neither comes with a name. This page is not claiming a better number. It is pointing out that a checkable person beats an unaudited percentage, whoever publishes it.
Two absences worth naming. No chemistry case study exists. The published student case studies are real and worth reading, and every single one of them is SAT, ACT, or MCAT. And there is no third-party review presence on this site at all, while the strongest competitor on this search holds more than 200 five-star reviews. That is a genuine disadvantage, it is the clearest one across seven builds, and it is why no stars appear anywhere on this page.
